Kere House
A home for a retired couple beside a village tank outside Kanakapura. The rooms wrap a courtyard with a single tamarind tree; 450 mm rammed-earth walls store the day's heat and release it after dark, so the house needs no air conditioning.

The studio
Nine of us, in a converted printing press in Basavanagudi. We take on four or five new buildings a year so each one gets the whole studio's attention.
Mass before machines
Thick walls, deep eaves and cross breezes do the cooling first. Fans and pumps come second.
Material from nearby
Earth from the site, brick from the next village, timber we can trace. It keeps money and skill local.
Drawn by hand first
Every project starts on butter paper at 1 : 100 before it reaches a screen.
